................................... Joint
Project with SIDO Mwanza "More Tools for Tanzania"
The
Mwanza Workshop
and has been up and running since June 2005. The two Tanzanian workers
Saidi and Vivienne are turning out tool
kits for artisan groups in Lake Zone, refurbishing over 200 kits a year, about
four times the output of our Crickhowell workshop.
Saidi has been out and about in Mwanza Region, carrying
out training for some blacksmiths groups. He has been training them to
make tools for us to sell here in Wales such as draw knives,
as well as improving the finishing of tools for sale to Tanzanians. They have recently been joined by Sunday who sharpens saws - lots of them.
We
are now packing sewing kits for Singida and Tanga
Look at our map of Tanzania.
.......................................... In
February 2005
we sent off the container, weighing 17 tonnes and holding over 16,000 tools
and pieces of equipment. It has
passed through Dar es Salaam, and is at last in Mwanza. Now SIDO staff
have turned that load into a fully functioning tool-refurbishing
workshop - only two staff at present - soon to be four. The tool kits
we sent have been distributed and tool requests
from Lake Zone are now being directed straight to the workshop. They can
now turn round a request in less than a month, which previously took us up to a year.
We
are actively fund-raising to support this project over the next
six years.
