All money taken at these events goes to support our work in Tanzania

Last year we were at Seed Swaps in Carmarthen, Hereford, Abergavenny and Malvern, Blossom Time in Putley, Seedling Sunday at Machynlleth, Tretower Court, the Smallholders Show in Builth Wells, Africa Market Day at Hay Festival, the Garden Festival at Much Marcle, Glastonbury Festival, the Green Man Festival, Llangynidir and Llangattock Shows, The Big Skill, Abergavenny Food Festival, the World Trade Fair, the Big Apple and Hay at Christmas.

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE CYMRU collects old and unwanted hand tools from all over Wales. We clean, repair and sharpen them, and send tool kits to grass roots community groups in several African countries. At present we concentrate our efforts on Tanzania.

New TOOL collection point is now up and running

A new tools collection point in Carmarthen is up and running, and Colin Hill picked up some nice tools today.

It’s in the Healthy Planet bookstore, which is in the old Allied Carpet store in Pensarn, Carmarthen. The store is currently open Monday to Saturday from 10am, closing times in the afternoon vary. For up to date opening times visit the Healthy Planet Carmarthen Facebook page.

Why we send tools to Tanzania

This is the working sledge hammer of the Nyiboko Blacksmiths Group in the remote Serengeti District of Tanzania.

A danger to the user and anyone nearby.

A sledge from TFSR Cymru will give many years of safe and happy use.

Tony Care returned from a visit to Tanzania in February where he visited groups in need of tools, and also artisans who had received tool kits from the Mwanza Tools Workshop.

Mahage Nyigua using the hammer – the one on the right isn’t much better.

Cheap Chinese hammers are available, but don’t last . . .

Green Man Festival

We had a wonderful dry Green Man Festival

Our workshops were as popular as ever – blacksmithing hooks and pokers, and making hazel whistles. Sold a few tools too . . .

Garden Tools Delivered . . .

A large lorry blocked Standard Street this week while volunteers unloaded an enormous pile of tools collected in the recent “Tools Amnesty”, run by the the Garden Centre Group with garden centres in South Wales.

Fair Trade Tools attract Jane Davidson to TFSR stall

Jane Davidson, Welsh Assembly Minister for the Environment, was impressed with the Fair Trade tools on our stall at the Brecon Beacons Green Fair.

She was one of many who bought a goat bell made from recycled steel by Milundumo Group, rural blacksmiths from Shinyanga Region. They plan to buy a shearing machine with the money they have earnt, which will speed up their production in future.

Dr William Shija – a new Patron for TFSR Cymru

We are so pleased to announce that Dr William Shija has just agreed to become the first patron of TFSR Cymru.

Dr Shija is the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and is based in London. His post has just been extended for another five years.

He comes from Sengerema, a small town in Tanzania where we send a lot of our tool kits. Formally he was the MP in Mwanza – the home of our Tanzanian Tool Refurbishing Workshop.
